As our board reviews the Round 3 Capt. Sax Scholarship applications, we want to highlight another outstanding recipient from Round 2—Lake Keating.

Lake is earning an Aeronautics degree at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott Campus, the same place where Capt. John Sax began his aviation journey. He is also minoring in Air Traffic Management, Applied Meteorology, Mandarin Chinese, and Defense Studies. Recently, he earned his Private Pilot Certificate at Embry-Riddle and will continue training at Leighnor Aviation, a local Prescott flight school. These are the same skies where Captain John Sax first learned to fly.

From the Marine Corps to the Cockpit

Lake’s aviation journey began in 2018 when he trained as a UH-1Y Crew Chief with HMLAT-303. Over the next few years, he gained experience, advanced his skills, and became a Night Systems Instructor with HMLA-167. In 2022, he deployed with VMM-263 as part of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit.

After this deployment, he transitioned out of the Marine Corps to attend Embry-Riddle. His goal is to become a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and secure a pilot slot for a manned aircraft.

Continuing the Legacy of Capt. John Sax

Lake’s dedication to aviation and military service reflects Capt. Sax’s passion and commitment. Just as John Sax pursued his dreams at Embry-Riddle’s Prescott Campus, Lake is following a similar path. His determination and drive set him apart, and we are honored to support him.

Through the Capt. Sax Scholarship, we ensure that Capt. John Sax’s legacy lives on through the lives we touch in his honor. We look forward to seeing Lake’s success as he works toward his next chapter.
