We’re proud to highlight Capt Sax Foundation scholarship recipient, Emma Fuchs.✈️
Raised in southern New Mexico, aviation wasn’t a part of Emma’s family background or everyday life growing up. It was not until college, while searching for a path that truly inspired her, that she found her calling to fly.
Determined to find her place in aviation, Emma showed up at a local airport willing to do whatever was needed, from holding wrenches to sweeping shop floors. That initiative led to a job in a maintenance shop office and eventually introduced her to a community that became a second family. Through mentorship and support from those around her, she joined an EAA chapter and completed her Private Pilot Certificate.
Emma continued immersing herself in aviation, co-founding a flying club with three other women while finishing her degree in aerospace engineering. After working for the Department of the Navy at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, she realized flying was no longer just a hobby. It was the future she wanted to pursue seriously.
Today, Emma is training toward her commercial pilot and flight instructor certificates while working full time as a construction engineer. Though the journey requires sacrifice and stretching every dollar, she describes aviation as one of the greatest sources of joy, growth, and purpose in her life.
Emma’s journey is a reminder of what support can mean at the right moment. It can help someone keep moving forward, and building toward the future they have worked so hard to pursue.
