Capt Sax Aviation Scholarship Recipient: David Hurt

Today we’re proud to highlight past Capt Sax Foundation scholarship recipient, David Hurt, and celebrate a major milestone he has achieved since receiving his scholarship.

David’s aviation journey is rooted in service, discipline, and a deep respect for the craft. He began his career in the United States Marine Corps as an MV-22B Osprey mechanic, serving on active duty from 2006 to 2011 at New River MCAS. During that time, he supported VMMT-204 and VMM-365, including the “Blue Knights” transition from the CH-46 to the MV-22 platform. His deployment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM further shaped his foundation in aviation and leadership.
After separating from the military, David earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, graduating Cum Laude from Washington State University. He later continued his aviation career as a Senior Propulsion Engineer at Horizon Air, staying closely connected to aircraft performance and operations.

But the goal was always clear: becoming a commercial rated pilot.

In 2024, David earned his Private Pilot ASEL Certificate, a milestone reflecting years of persistence and commitment. He is now working toward his instrument rating, with plans to continue through to his ATP and ultimately fly wide body aircraft in cargo operations.
David’s path reflects the determination required to transition from military service into a civilian aviation career while navigating technical and financial barriers along the way. Stories like his show why aviation scholarships and grants matter. From pilot training to advanced ratings, these opportunities help keep experienced aviation professionals moving toward their goals.
